THE CLIMATE—CAR COLOUR CONNECTION
BASF SAYS CAR PAINT WILL SOON ECHO SUSTAINABLE EFFORTS
Each year, BASF unveils a portfolio of colours the global chemicals leader believes will one day dominate roads across the globe. This year’s collection—dubbed On Volude by BASF’s global analysis team—is designed to highlight the crossroads between human and non-human intelligence, channelling the massive shift in AI we’ve seen in the present day and will continue to see in the future. In the 2023-24 edition, the Americas regions are treated to a stunning array of lighter shades and expressive color shifts that evoke positive feelings, according to BASF. On Volude not only offers a diverse colour palette but also prioritizes sustainable and functional designs. The On Volude portfolio focuses on enhancing cooling effects in vehicles through solar reflectance, exploring sensor-based mobility concepts, and responsible raw material sourcing.
Liz Hoffman, head of Automotive Color Design for the Americas, reveals that red-leaning pastels and mid-tones are replaced with yellow and green effects, symbolizing renewal and evolving mindsets in automotive design. While whites and blacks remain popular automotive colours, the rise of earth tones in the On Volude collection signifies a sustainable push globally.
